Lerato Makhisa is the founder of Ribbons Collection, a premium, Bloemfontein-based brand dedicated to handcrafted leather footwear. After pivoting her career during the 2020 pandemic, she successfully championed local craftsmanship and is now focused on launching a manufacturing school to empower Free State youth and women with artisanal skills.

About Ribbons Collection
Since 2015, Ribbons Collection has been a proudly 100% Black female-owned South African leather manufacturing and distribution company, specializing in handcrafted genuine leather shoes, belts, wallets, bags, and premium leather accessories. Our passion for quality craftsmanship and timeless design has helped us build a trusted reputation among customers across South Africa.
Every product is carefully handcrafted using premium genuine leather by skilled local artisans, combining traditional techniques with modern style to create durable, elegant leather goods made to last. From everyday essentials to custom-made leather products, we are committed to delivering exceptional quality while supporting local manufacturing and celebrating South African craftsmanship.
Our craft follows the same patient process it always has. Every pair begins with full-grain genuine leather, hand-selected for its strength and character. Patterns are cut by hand, panels are stitched and shaped by experienced artisans, and each shoe is lasted, soled and finished one at a time in our Bloemfontein workshop. Because no production line hurries the work, every Ribbons Collection shoe carries the subtle marks of its maker — and the durability that only true handcrafting delivers.
We believe South African leather craftsmanship deserves a place on the world stage. That is why we manufacture locally, train locally, and source premium materials from trusted local suppliers wherever possible. Beyond the workshop, we are building a manufacturing school to pass artisanal shoemaking skills on to the youth and women of the Free State — so the craft, and the jobs it creates, stay rooted in our community.
